What is Linux?

Linux is a open-source Unix operating systems based on the Linux kernel like Windows, Mac, Android, etc. Linux consists of three parts Kernal, Shell and Programs.

Linux has long been the basis of commercial networking devices, but now it's a mainstay of enterprise infrastructure. Linux is a tried-and-true, open-source operating system released in September 17,1991 for computers, but its use has expanded to underpin systems for cars, phones, web servers and, more recently, networking gear.

Main use of Linux :
Linux is used both to run parts of the Internet, as well as to run small and large networks in coporations, offices and homes. Since Linux is stable, secure and robust, it's perfect for storing huge databases of information.

It allows a large number of users to work simultaneously and handles them efficiently. Linux is a true multitasking system that doesn't slow down even downloading big files. Linux performs all its tasks efficiently even if the hard disk is almost full.

3. Background services
4. OS Shell
5. Graphics server
6. Desktop environment
7. Applications

Disadvantages of Linux OS

1. Poor support for games
2. Desktop software is still rare.
3. No single way of packaging software.
4. No standard desktop environment.
